Kopecky Out For Game Five

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

Tomas Kopecky is not going to be available for game five against Anaheim on Sunday. He has a swollen cheek resulting from his game four fight with Francois Beauchemin.

It sure is a shame to see him miss time because of a fight that was a bad idea in the first place. The Red Wings were completely dominating the Ducks at the point in the game when the fight occurred. It really could have only served to fire up the Ducks. I guess Kopecky’s enthusiasm got the best of him.

He will be missed in game five. He’s a big physical presence who plays with a lot of grit and energy. He’s been playing very well in the playoffs so far. Luckily, the Red Wings depth is second to none. Kopecky will be replaced by Justin Abdelkader who is another of the Wings great players in Grand Rapids. If he plays half as a well as Ericsson did when he was called up, it’ll be just fine.

The injuries are starting to pile up now with Rafalski, Draper, and Lilja also out. Hopefully, some of them will start coming back soon. They’re all close to being cleared to play.

Rafalski Out For Game One

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Brian Rafalski will not be playing in game one against the Ducks. The reason is not being released and Mike Babcock says that he’s day-to-day.

This means that Ericsson is being moved up to top defensive pairing; he’ll be paired Lidstrom. This is a huge opportunity for the young defenseman. He’s played so well since they brought him up from Grand Rapids. I really think he’s up to the task. I have almost as much confidence in him as I do in Lidstrom. I’m looking forward to seeing him get more minutes.

Chelios will be in tonight to round out the third pairing with Lebda.
