Minnesota at Detroit (11/19/10)

The Red Wings played the Minnesota Wild tonight at the Joe. Jimmy Howard was the starter for the Wings and the Wild went with their backup goalie, Jose Theodore.

I thought the Red Wings played really well in this game although it didn’t seem to translate into goals. For most of the game the Wild were playing extremely tight defense. There was just nowhere for the Wings to go with the puck. When they got it deep the Wild were taking away all the passing lanes and clogging the ice in front of the net. They weren’t very concerned with trying to score; they were just playing very conservatively.

The Wild were still able to score goals however and on very few shots. They had a good scoring chance where Jimmy Howard was completely screened and they also had a fluky goal that somehow squeezed between Howard’s skate and the post. For the most part I thought Howard played well, but the goals still came. Even so, he made some incredible, acrobatic saves.

The Red Wings fourth line had another great game. They scored two of the Wings’ three goals. Eaves was in the lineup tonight. It doesn’t seem to matter whether it’s Eaves or Miller; they’re both very effective.

The Wings had the lead three to two as they approached the final minute of the game. Minnesota tied it up though just as they were about to pull their goalie.

The game went into overtime and John Madden scored the game winning goal for the Wild.

Minnesota played a very defensive and patient game. The Wings were all over them and they still held on and got the win. The Red Wings played well but it just didn’t work out for them.
