Colorado at Detroit (11/13/10)

The Wings played the Avalanche tonight at Joe Louis Arena with Howard and Budaj as the starting goaltenders.  Eaves was in the lineup and Miller was a healthy scratch as Babcock continues having them take turns.

This was a pretty one sided game with the Wings dominating.  For the first two periods Colorado hardly had the puck.  The Avs turned it around a little in the third period by activating their defense to pressure the Red Wings and by getting some power play time.

Bertuzzi scored a beautiful goal after a nice setup from Franzen.  It was a pinpoint shot that was placed just over Budaj’s shoulder in what was, just barely, a puck-sized hole.

Hudler scored his first goal of the season and was visibly relieved to be rid of the goose egg.  He had just come out of the penalty box and Lidstrom sprung him with a long outlet pass.  Hudler had trouble catching up to the puck and didn’t get much on the shot.  But as Budaj blocked it the puck came back into Hudler’s feet and he took it with him behind the net.  He put the puck back towards Budaj from near the back boards and banked it in off of Budaj’s skate.  It was a great second effort by Hudler and a pretty creative play to find a way to make something out of nothing.

Cleary also scored a goal after a very nice pass by Bertuzzi.  It was a backhand shot that might have been deflected on the way to Budaj.

At the other end of the ice Howard didn’t have much to do for most of the game.  In the third period Colorado was a little more active.  Detroit got into some penalty trouble and the Avs had a 5 on 3 for 37 seconds.  Howard’s skate got tangled up with the skate of an Avs player and he wasn’t able to get back into position in time to stop a shot by Liles.  The contact was outside of the crease so there was no goalie interference but you could hardly fault Howard for giving up that one.

Colorado pulled their goalie with over two minutes left in the game but neither team was able to score another goal.

The Wings won their third game in a row in pretty convincing fashion.  They were dominant and played a very solid, complete game.
