Red Wings Part Ways With Chelios

Chris Chelios will not be returning to the Red Wings next year. Ken Holland declined to offer him a new contract. It’s not much of a surprise and it’s probably a good thing for the team. With the depth that they have on defense it doesn’t make sense to have Chelios on the roster. We saw in the playoffs how great Ericsson is and he deserves the spot. Not to mention all of the other great defensemen on the team. It’s no slight to Chelios, the Red Wings just don’t have room for him.

Ken Holland also said that he believes Chelios has another year left in him. It’s not clear yet if he will try to play somewhere else. I think he’d be a great fit for our local Tampa Bay Lightning. They’ve had a lot turmoil on defense lately. Chelios, with his low cap hit and tons of experience would be great as a stabalizer and a mentor to the younger players.

Thanks to Chris Chelios for 10 years of great play and entertaining hockey. We wish him all the best.
