The NHL honored their top stars Thursday night at the annual NHL awards. The Red Wings had a pretty impressive showing taking home 4 awards in total.
Pavel Datsyuk won the Selke Award for top defensive forward in the NHL, and he also won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for the player who displays gentlemanly conduct.
Gordie Howe won the first ever lifetime achievement award.
Nick Lidstrom won the Norris Trophy for best defenseman for the sixth time.
Dominik Hasek was there to accept the Jennings Award on behalf of himself and Chris Osgood for goalies with the fewest goals against in the regular season. This wasn’t really awarded during the show since it was based on stats and not votes. It was known at the end of the regular season who the winners were.
It was great to see Datsyuk win the Selke, but at the same time it was kind of disappointing for Zetterberg. Too bad they couldn’t have both won it.
No surprises with the Lady Byng, or the Norris.
Gordie Howe winning the lifetime achievement award was an extra special treat. It was sure nice to see the rest of the league recognzie Mr. Hockey and show him some much deserved love.

Todd McLellan has been hired by the San Jose Sharks to be there new head coach. He will replace Ron Wilson who was fired this week.
McLellan was an assistant coach for the Red Wings for the past three seasons. It was well known that it was only a matter of time before he would be offered head coaching job somewhere. He was a great assistant coach and the Red Wings will miss him. This should make for some interesting coaching duels when the Red Wings play the Sharks next season.

The Hockey News is reporting that the Red Wings signed coach Mike Babcock to a three contract. The announcement is expected to be made Wednesday morning.
This is great news for Red Wings fans! He’s probably the best coach in the league right now and I think he may end up being one of the best of all time before he’s done. The guy is hockey-smart, and people-smart. That’s a great combination for a hockey coach.

According to The Hockey News, Dominik Hasek will announce his retirement today at a press conference scheduled for 11:00AM. The official reason for the press conference has not been officially declared, but it’s been widely speculated that Hasek would retire after this season. This won’t be the first time that he’s retired, but I have a feeling that this time it’s for real.
UPDATE:
Dominik Hasek did announce his retirement on Monday.

The Hockey News has reported that one of the Red Wings has dropped the Stanley Cup and dented it. The fall happened while the team was celebrating at Cheli’s Chili Bar. The dent was quickly repaired so no harm done. Brett Lebda is denying that he was the one who dropped it, so you know what that probably means. :-)

The Detroit Free Press reported that there were over 1.4 million people at the parade and celebration at Hart Plaza in Detroit on Friday. It was a truly impressive crowd. I was able to watch the whole thing via streaming video on the internet. Channel 4 and channel 7 both had live coverage. The aerial shots of the crowd were incredible! It was a real treat to see the team celebrating with the home town fans. I wish I could have been there!

Hulu has full NHL games on available for viewing online. If you haven’t heard of it, Hulu is a video service started by NBC and Universal. They have full movies and TV shows that you can watch for free with just a few commercials. The videos are good quality and look decent even in full screen.
At the moment they have game 5 of the finals available to watch but not game 6. I suspect game 6 will be up there soon. They also have lots of other NHL vidoes. Check it out: http://www.hulu.com/nhl

Henrik Zetterberg was awarded the 2008 Conn Smythe trophy as MVP of the playoffs. There were a few legitimate contenders for who should get the award, but you can’t argue against Zetterberg. He really deserves it. He’s probably the best two way player in the game today. Way to go!
